OUR RESPONSIBLE TOURISM (ECO TOURISM )
THERE ARE
AT LEAST FOUR (4) GOOD REASONS YOU SHOULD COME WITH US.
1. We have formed close working
partnerships with the best in-country outfitters and the
best
lodges and camps-outfits that have decades of experience
with guests on safari. In addition, we are committed to
employing local people to the maximum extent possible.
We pay our people well and, just as important, we
provide them with training and involve them in our
company. They are trusted partners in providing our
guests with the best safari experience available in
Kenya
2. Ethical tourism is one of the cornerstones
of our company. Eyes On Nature Expeditions is committed
to travel
that provides exciting opportunities for our guests
while enriching lives and protecting habitats in East
Africa. We support micro-economic development projects
with a number of tribal groups in Kenya. These programs
allow our guests exclusive entry onto tribal lands while
giving local people local control over the way tourism
is introduced and the way dollars earned are used. Our
programs open up rare opportunities for in-depth
exchanges between western culture and traditional
African cultures.
3.
We offer responsible tourism by giving back to
the community through the contribution of 5-10
percent of our income from every
tour we sell. We contribute to LECDEN-KENYA, an NGO
working with the less fortunate members of society. For
more information please visit the website at

4. Education is one of the cornerstones of Eyes
On Nature Expeditions. On our safaris , you learn by
going. It is a highly entertaining process of deepening
discovery that we call Natural Learning and it's an
integral part of every one of our safaris . As our
guides teach you to spot and identify game and track
animals, you begin to see with new eyes. You become more
curious and observant about animal behaviors, and you
begin to understand how all the pieces of the ecosystem
fit together. In addition, we can also arrange your
safari to give you special access to amazing people who
know Africa's depths: researchers, directors of
non-governmental organizations (NGOs) tribal councils,
and camp owners. At Eyes On Nature Expeditions we want
you to come away with a deeper understanding of an
astonishing landscape.

Once you have been on an exclusive Eyes on
Nature Expeditions safari you will never go
back to a lesser experience!
"Luxury" is a very relative concept – for a
safari agent or outfitter it usually means
whatever “deals” they can negotiate (with
lodges and ground operators) that will
eventually get classified as “luxurious” in
their itineraries! Anyone familiar with the
luxury end of the safari industry in East
Africa will find many glaring deficiencies
in self-proclaimed luxury safaris from
overrated companies who feature so
prominently in glossy travel magazines!
Luxury rates don't always translate into
luxury safaris! We cannot be more serious
about this statement! How much you pay for
your safari is meaningless - some people
believe they are on a luxury safari on $250
a day! Some perceive a luxury safari to cost
at least $1000 per day! Many think they are
on a luxury safari because they paid $1000 a
day for a safari - meanwhile it only has a
fair market value of $500 a day!
In East Africa, the most expensive lodges
are not always the best choices! This is a
very important point that many travel agents
and overseas tour companies either do not
understand or won't admit! With wildlife
movement patterns that change every month,
the best lodge is the right lodge, at the
right time, in the right place at the right
price! We understand this.
Here at Eyes on Nature Expeditions, we do
not define luxury in monetary terms. For us,
luxury means Ease, Time and Space. And we
prefer the word "exclusive" because we are
unique in many ways.

An African safari is a deeply rewarding
experience that some have even described as
spiritual; to walk this land, see these
animals, climb these mountains, brings one
closer to nature and indeed an innate
primeval cord deep within all of us. The
beaches, mountains, and savannas of Africa
are a connectiecon for humans to an earlier
time when man and beast shared the land. It
is this complex experience of emotions that
draws people from around the world to climb
the mountains of Kenya and Tanzania, stare
into the face of lions, and snorkel the
reefs of the Kenyan coast. Kenya Adventure

Wildebeest Migration
Wildebeest location updates and a month by
month guide to lodges and camps giving you
the best opportunity to witness the east
Africa’s wildebeest migration.
The endless plains of east Africa are the
setting for the world’s greatest wildlife
spectacle - the 1.5 million animal ungulate
(wildebeest) migration. From the vast
Serengeti plains to the champagne colored
hills of Kenya’s Masai Mara over 1.4 million
wildebeest and 200,000 zebra and gazelle,
relentlessly tracked by Africa’s great
predators, migrate in a clockwise fashion
over 1,800 miles each year in search of rain
ripened grass.
There is no real beginning or end to a
wildebeest's journey. Its life is an endless
pilgrimage, a constant search for food and
water. The only beginning is at the moment
of birth. An estimated 400,000 wildebeest
calves are born during a six week period
early each year - usually between late
January and mid-March.
The Migratory Path
December, January, Feburary, March: The
Serengeti National Park / Ngorongoro
Conservation Area is arguably the most
impressive wildlife sanctuary in the world.
During the months December through March the
seemingly unending plains of the southern
Serengeti and the Conservation Area are
inhabited by enormous herds of wildebeest
and zebra. The great herds graze on rain
ripened grass. This is the best time to visit
the Serengeti.
In the calving season (late January through
mid March when over 80% of the wildebeest
give birth over a period of a few weeks) the
herds concentrate at the Ndutu and Salei
plains (Southern Serengeti / Ngorongoro
Conservation Area) attracting the attention
of predators like lion, cheetah and hyena.
During this period the migration is best
observed from a luxury mobile camp in the
Ndutu / Naabi area or from Ndutu Safari
Lodge.
April, May: During the months April and May
the depleted plains are unable to sustain
the endless herds. The migration, sweeping
west and north, moves from the short grass
plains of the southern Serengeti /
Ngorongoro Conservation Area to the long
grass plains and woodland of the Serengeti’s
western Corridor, almost to Lake Victoria.
This period is during the long rains and is
considered off season for wildlife viewing
in east Africa as roads are often
impassable. Ndutu Safari Lodge, Kusini Camp
and the Serengeti Serena Lodge are fine for
wildlife viewing during this time. So are
campsites in the Ndutu/Naabi area.
June: By the end of May the wildebeest have
exhausted the Western Corridor’s best
pastures and the herds must move further
north. Entering the Lamai Wedge and the Mara
Triangle breeding occurs May through June. |
November
ends the migration is making its way back to
the southern Serengeti and early in the year
they once again give birth. The circle of
life is complete.
*Note - the migration is a natural event and
the timing varies month by month; year by
year.

Elephant Pepper Camp:
Situated right on the Northern Edge of the
Maasai Mara reserve this 8-tented bush camp,
is tucked away in a prime wildlife area.
Surrounded by the Mara’s ubiquitous
game, it's a seasonal camp, which is taken
down for a month or so in the rainy seasons.
Elephant Pepper Camp (originally Mara Bush
Camp) offers a unique, comfortable
environment and is aptly named after the
Warburgia Ugandensis tree, which is commonly
known as the Elephant Pepper tree.
The true bush experience of walking and
unwinding around the glowing embers of a
campfire all add to the authenticity of a
true bush experience. Creative comforts are
not sacrificed either with ensuite bathrooms
being part of each spacious tent.
Looking from the camp across the plains one
can see the ‘greatest game show on
earth’ when the annual wildebeest
migration thunders past to seek new grazing
in the lush savannahs of the Maasai Mara.
Elsa's Kopje:
Elsa's Kopje is set in the untamed
wilderness of Meru National Park. Named
after the Elsa the lioness of 'Born Free'
fame, the lodge is invisible to the eye as
you approach the kopje. Each of the 9
individually built cottages is luxuriously
appointed, designed to incorporate the
natural features of the rocky hillside. The
cottages are spacious and have double or
twin beds, with en-suite bathrooms. There is
an open bar area, lounge and dining room
where guests can relax. The infinity pool
overlooks the Meru plains.
Activities available here include game
drives in 4-wheel drive vehicles, night game
drives and guided bush walks. Regular
sightings include Beisa Oryx, Gerenuk,
Elephant, Grevy’s Zebra, Reticulated
Giraffe, Lesser Kudu, Grant’s
Gazelle, Leopard, Lion, Cheetah, Rhino and
the rare, elusive Greater Kudu. Meru is also
famous for its bird life. Day excursions can
be taken to the Tana River and visits to the
local Theraka village can be arranged.

A choice of three restaurants At the

food has the 'home cooked' touch - tasty,
comforting and ample. There award winning
chefs and three dining venues see to that.
They is the Mukutan Coffee Garden for
Nairobi's finest coffee and light meals, the
Pwani Pool Restaurant for al fresco meals
and the Dining Room for a full English
breakfast.
Guest security has always been a priority at
the Fairview. They keep up with the times by
hiring international security experts to
regularly assess their risk. The security
system combines the latest technology with
well trained staff: the strongest entrance
barriers in Kenya, discrete but well placed
CCTV cameras, electronic guard patrol
systems, radio alarms and panic buttons,
sophisticated European access systems,
electronic room safes and a security team
trained to international standards.
A first class hotel needs first class
support services. With two water sources and
large water storage tanks, guests can be
sure of a reliable supply of clean water.
Two 300 KVA back up generators ensure that
guests are never left in the dark and a
state-of-the-art laundry offers same day
cleaning if necessary.
Owned and managed by three generations of
the Szlapak family since 1946 (and since
1993, joined by Eliana Szlapak's husband,

or first class - and even apartments for
those staying a while.

Kenya Adventure Safari
Kenya has long been known as an adventurer's
paradise. This is a land of endless
opportunity for the active traveller, a
country rich with possibilities for
adventure and discovery.
For the Trekker, Kenya is a world of highs
and lows- From the snow capped peak of Mt
Kenya to the desert plains of the north.
There are a range of treks from sedate hill
walks through game rich ranges to high
altitude routes on alpine slopes.
For those aiming higher, Kenya offers plenty
of challenges. Climbers may be aware of the
mighty peak of Mt Kenya, but there are many
other climbing areas to be explored. There
is a broad scope of destinations, from
granite cliffs and volcanic rock towers to
the ultimate challenge- a technical assault
on Africa’s second highest summit.
Kenya has some excellent potential areas for
off road mountain biking. As the popularity
of the sport increases, more and more
mountain bikes are now for hire, and there
is plenty of undiscovered country for bush
biking.
Kenya is home to a very active equestrian
community, and horses are a great way to
explore wilderness areas. Riding through
herds of game is an ideal way to experience
the wild up close and personal.
Looking for a more unusual mode of
transport? The North of Kenya has a thriving
camel culture, and the camel is used by many
nomadic tribes. These deserts and wide arid
plain lands have long been crossed by camel
trains, following ancient routes through
deep valleys and along winding dry river
beds. Large herds of dromedary (single
humped) camels are found throughout the
North. A safari by camel is a unique way to
see this country. The trackless deserts and
high ranges of the Northern frontier are
beautiful and remote places, completely
isolated from the modern world. Walking
through this wilderness with a camel train,
camping in the wild and sleeping under the
stars, you can travel through an Africa
unchanged since the passage of the first
explorers…
Far from the northern deserts, the waters of
the Indian Ocean are an adventurers
playground. The coast of Kenya has a well
deserved reputation for big game fishing and
has attracted fishing devotees such as
Ernest Hemingway, drawn by the promise of
world-class fishing. Local tag and release
programs ensure eco-friendly fishing.
T
But having now deployed this vague seduction
on a number of occasions, I'm growing
disenchanted with it. My complaint is that
it's imprecise. For though the phrase is
rich in suggestion, it's starved for
specificity. And Africa, as I've come to
appreciate, is the most specific place on
Earth.
This dusty elephant family, which
congregated around a nearly dry riverbed,
would soon be soothed by the rains of April
and May. I headed to Kenya, an East African
nation roughly twice the size of Nevada, in
early spring just before the rainy season
settled in.
Discover a new world...
We believe that there is much more to a
wildlife holiday than the list of species
and a full itinerary. Supporting
conservation and showing our travellers the
whole world of wildlife, during an easy but
comprehensive natural history holiday are
guiding principles when planning our trips.
Providing opportunities and time to learn
about local cultures and enjoy beautiful
scenery are also key ingredients, as well as
being flexible enough to adapt to our
travellers' particular interests.
Over the past 22 years, we at Wildlife
Travel have worked closely with local ct,
September, October: By July the countless
herds have amassed along the swollen Mara
River - a final barrier from the short sweet
grasses of the Masai Mara. Sometimes the
crossing place they have chosen is shallow
allowing the majority of animals to pass
safely. In other areas the waters boil with
drowning wildebeest and slashing crocodiles.
Please note that the vast majority of
travelers do not witness the wildebeest
crossing of the Mara as the timing and
duration varies widely each year - in years
of little rain very few wildebeest cross the
Mara River into Kenya.
Between July and October the wildebeest
reside in the Mara. We recommend Governor's
Il Moran Tented Camp as the leading safari
camp in the Masai Mara. Other tented camps
include Governor's Main Camp, Little
Governor’s Camp, and Bataluer Camp.
Tanzanian lodges recommended during this
time include Faru Faru River Lodge, Sasakwa
Hill Lodge, Sabora Plains Tented Camp,
Grumeti River Camp, Migration Camp and
Kirawira Camp. Kirawira and Moru area
campsites are best.
November: The arrival of the short rains
call the migration southward. During the
short rains of November the wildebeest
migration is best viewed from Klein’s Camp.
Campsites in the Lobo area are best.
As
This is a transitional period between the
rains and the dry season. Faru Faru River
Lodge, Sasakwa Hill Lodge, Sabora Plains
Tented Camp, Grumeti River Camp, Migration
Camp, and Kirawira Camp are good options for
viewing the migration at this time. Seronera
and Moru area campsites are best.
